Spanning over nine days and almost 450 miles, the 23rd annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Relay Run begins on April 26, 2023. This annual event honors those listed on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Carson City, Nevada. The goal is to bring public attention to those listed on the Memorial and to the dedication and sacrifice made by all Nevada Law Enforcement Officers.
“This is an opportunity to recognize the sacrifice of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. For the University Police Department – Northern Command, it is a reminder of Sgt. George Sullivan, who was murdered on campus on January 13, 1998. By doing this event, we honor his memory and spirit,” Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police for UPD – Northern Command Eric James said.
The annual Memorial Run is being organized to bring recognition to National Police Memorial Week and all Nevada law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Each leg of the Memorial run represents an Officer listed on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. As of 2023, 152 names are now engraved on the Memorial.
All law enforcement entities or jurisdictions are welcome to participate and runners must be from the ranks of active Nevada peace officers, retired peace officers and Federal Law Enforcement agencies. This run brings together Nevada Law Enforcement Officers and supporters for the single purpose of supporting each other. This event endeavors to support the goals and purpose of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Commission.
This will be UPD’s second year participating, and they will be running with the Reno Police Department. The run begins in Las Vegas and concludes in Carson City. UPD’s runners will be participating in their portion of the run on May 2. The relay will conclude with the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony, on May 4, 2023, at 1 p.m. in Carson City.
