Ph.D. in Earthquake Geology, NSL Graduate Student

Summary

Hannah grew up in Hawke's Bay, Aotearoa New Zealand where the routine ground shaking of small earthquakes was an intrinsic part of daily life. These shaky experiences resonated with her and fueled Hannah's interest in earthquake geology while she completed a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Geography at the University of Otago, Aotearoa New Zealand in 2021. Hannah received a Master's degree in Earth Science from the University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand in 2024 under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Eccles, Dr. James Muirhead, and Prof. Mark Stirling, characterizing the geologically recent activity of the Mangatangi Fault in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. During Hannah's Master's degree, she worked as a research assistant for DEVORA (DEterminig VOlcanic Risk in Auckland) constraining the baseline seismicity of the Auckland Region. In August 2024, Hannah moved to the 性爱五色天, Reno to start her Ph.D. in Earthquake Geology under the supervision of Prof. Christie Rowe. Her current research is focused on understanding why some faults creep and others don't by looking at geomorphic and mineral controls.

Hannah is passionate about public outreach and understanding seismic hazard in order to reduce risk and promote community resilience. Since 2022, Hannah has been involved in numerous media and community outreach activities, inspiring K-12 students and the wider community to understand the natural hazards we live amongst. At the beginning of 2024, Hannah joined the Geoscience Society of New Zealand Executive Committee as the Co-Editor of the Geoscientist Aotearoa Magazine where she continues to share the latest geoscience news and findings to the community.
