  • The rededication of the flag pole and its pillar and the unveiling of a new POW-MIA chair of honor at Mackay Stadium highlighted this year’s Salute to Service on Nov. 2 prior to the Colorado State-Nevada football game. A special rededication ceremony of the flag pole honored the late Marine Corps 1st Lt. Frederick “Freddie” Williams, a Wolf Pack football player and track star in the early 1960s who attended officer candidate school after graduation before shipping off to South Vietnam. Williams died on May 26, 1968, after a sniper killed him on Go Noi Island near DaNang. - Nevada Appeal
