The ÐÔ°®ÎåÉ«Ìì, Reno Mathewson Gateway Project, developed by Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, was selected as the Best Education and Higher Education Project at the P3 Awards ceremony in New York City. This prestigious award celebrates public-private partnerships that use innovative strategies to enhance educational facilities.
Located at the south end of campus and connecting to downtown Reno, the prominent Gateway site creates a new “front door” to the University. The project includes the Gateway Parking Complex completed in January 2023, and the new College of Business building on schedule for completion in the summer of 2025. A future hospitality and conference venue will also be constructed, forming a seamless physical link between the University and Downtown Reno. This development is expected to foster greater business and community partnerships, driving regional economic growth.
“The Mathewson University Gateway project exemplifies innovation in P3 projects with its transition to a progressive master developer, design-build finance model, overcoming funding challenges with creativity and adaptability,” the P3 Awards judges commented. “Achieving commercial and financial close within 12 months highlights strong project management and stakeholder coordination, aligning with university goals and community expectations. The project’s sustainability focus and significant impact on the community are commendable.”
Public-private partnerships, or P3s, such as the one the University maintains with Edgemoor, focus on innovative approaches to expanding education facilities. The University joins dozens of higher education institutions across the country that are employing similar funding structures to ensure the completion of projects and state-of-the-art learning and research facilities.
The Edgemoor development team for the College of Business building includes LMN Architects, an architecture firm leader in the design of higher education facilities in North America as designer, and Clark Construction Group, LLC, a national contractor with experience successfully delivering more than 100 higher education projects on campuses across the country.
More than 70 percent of the project value was committed to local subcontractors, further providing local jobs and boosting the Northern Nevada economy. A total of 23 Northern Nevada subcontractors are engaged in this project. Additionally, the building is pursuing LEED Gold Certification, which will ensure significant energy and water savings.
“This project is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships and the dedication of the Edgemoor team, and our key partner the ÐÔ°®ÎåÉ«Ìì, Reno,” Edgemoor’s Senior Managing Director Geoff Stricker said. “We are privileged to have an opportunity to contribute to making the new College of Business a landmark in the Northern Nevada community and creating a better tomorrow for generations.”
The John Tulloch Business Building
The is now quickly becoming a landmark, easily spotted from Interstate 80, bringing attention to campus from the downtown urban corridor and forever transforming the city’s landscape. The building plays a key part in the University’s continued status as a national leader in research, and soon, the University’s esteemed College of Business faculty, the next generation of students, and members of Northern Nevada’s business community will join forces there to learn, innovate and improve the community.
The ÐÔ°®ÎåÉ«Ìì, Reno Foundation recently obtained a $20 million naming gift and a $5 million gift to be used for scholarships in the College of Business. The combined gifts are transformational and represent a significant portion of the philanthropic support the University is seeking for the building. The facility will be named the John Tulloch Business Building.
The new building features a 300-seat auditorium, a finance suite and trading lab with cutting-edge technology for real-time investment trading simulations, a comprehensive student outreach center to provide wraparound services to enrich and expand opportunities for students, case-method optimized teaching and study spaces, a café, collaboration zones, study niches and more.
Additionally, the new building will also serve as the hub for entrepreneurial activities and will house the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship.
“The building is an amazing tool, but it’s what goes on inside that really matters,” said College of Business Dean Greg Mosier. “We are educating the next generation of business leaders in a facility that meets 21st century expectations.”
