Summary
Mike Alger retired in 2024 after over 35 years with Channel 2 KTVN, 34 of which he served as their Chief Meteorologist.
During his tenure at KTVN, Mike provided extensive coverage during many historic weather events, including the New Year’s Flood of '97, Presidents' Day Blizzard of 1990 and the whole gambit of weather events from multi-year droughts in the 1990s to historic snowstorms to covering devastating wildfires which have affected the region.
An Emmy award winning meteorologist, Alger has been recognized for outstanding weather coverage with several awards including the Associated Press Best Weathercast Award in 1995, and the Radio and Television News Directors Association Best Weathercast Award in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2001.
Mike has served as the consulting meteorologist to the Nevada Department of Transportation for their road sensor program. He also served in an advisory capacity for Drought Task Force under former Governor Sandoval.
Mike received his degree in Geology and Chemistry from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where he was a Rhodes Scholar quarter finalist.
He received his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist certification by the American Meteorological Society. Mike and has served terms on the AMS Board of Broadcast Meteorology.
Now retired, he looks forward to passing on nearly four decades of experience to students.
