The 2022-23 season is underway for both Nevada men’s and women’s tennis, and the expectation is the same: To make it to the Mountain West Tournament. The men also hope to capitalize off their success from last season to become back-to-back Mountain West Champions and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. With the occurrences of inclement weather this winter that resulted in canceled matches, both the men and women will play their first matches at home this weekend at McArthur Tennis Center.
Last season, the Pack men won their first outright regular-season Mountain West title of any kind since 1982 and clinched their first NCAA Tournament bid after defeating New Mexico 4-3, in the Mountain West Championship final. This season, the Pack sit at 5-5, coming off a two-game winning streak after securing wins over University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 5-2, and Hawaii 4-3. On Sunday, Nevada will take on St. Mary’s, who are 1-5 on the season.
For the women, the 2021-22 season saw a promising finish to the season for the Pack, who finished 10-11 overall, making it through to the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament, upsetting the No. 1 seed Fresno State in the quarterfinals, 4-3. Currently, Nevada is 3-3 on the season coming off two canceled matches due to inclement weather, one of which that was set to be their first home match against William Jessup.
This weekend, the women will look to take on UC Davis on Friday, March 17, and Stanislaus State on Saturday, March 18 starting at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will have free pizza for fans, and the first 20 fans at each match will receive a free Nevada Tennis t-shirt. Following the women’s match on Saturday, the men will take on Air Force at 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday against Saint Mary’s at 12:00 p.m.
