Update on NIH Funding
February 11, 2025
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
In recent days there have been reports of Executive Orders and federal agency notices that have far-reaching implications for research conducted at our University. I would like to provide you with an update on a to reduce the Facilities and Administrative (F&A) rates, also called indirect costs for NIH-funded research.
NIH’s proposed reduction would eliminate more than $4 million per year in research infrastructure, such as startup packages, cost share on grants, utilities, sponsored projects (pre-award, grant set-up, and post-award), IRB and compliance, Environmental Health & Safety, equipment maintenance, internal grants, travel grants, to name a few. However, in response to a , including Attorney General of Nevada Aaron Ford, a judge in the United States District Court for Massachusetts on Monday, Feb. 10 issued a stopping the NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from implementing the rate change.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21.
Given this status, the University is advising all faculty with sponsored-project research to continue on with their work, following the current requirements in the Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) when preparing and submitting proposals to federal sponsors. This includes using the University’s current federally negotiated F&A rates, unless an alternative rate is specified in the FOA to which you are responding. It is important to adhere to all submission guidelines, eligibility criteria, budget requirements and certification processes. Any new requirements from federal agencies will be listed in the most current FOA. We strongly encourage faculty to work closely with Sponsored Projects to ensure full compliance before submission. For the latest updates on University guidelines and federal policy changes, please refer to the 性爱五色天, Reno’s Federal Administration Transition Impact webpage.
All research that is conducted at our University, which is the state of Nevada’s flagship land-grant institution, is critical to the fulfillment of our mission in serving the citizens of our state. The medical and scientific discoveries made on our campus throughout our 150-year history have been central to realizing a healthier and more prosperous future for all Nevadans. We will continue to update you as we learn more in the coming days.
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
