Tomorrow's Universe K-12 Student Art and Essay Competition

For over 60 years, the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center has served as a gateway to the universe, inspiring generations of students, educators and lifelong learners. As part of the 性爱五色天, Reno campus, the Planetarium plays a critical role in K-12 education, community engagement and scientific exploration. With the upcoming installation of Cosm's cutting-edge CX System (previously known as DomeX) in the dome theater, made up of over 3,800 LED panels, we are on the brink of a transformation. This state-of-the-art upgrade will redefine how we engage with astronomy, science and storytelling, setting a new standard for planetarium experiences in our region.

With exciting renovations on the horizon, we want to hear from the next generation of explorers—and their teachers!

The Tomorrow’s Universe Competition invites K-12 students and educators to imagine the possibilities of a newly renovated Planetarium. Participants will submit their creative visions based on their category:

  • Grades K-2: Submit a drawing of what you hope to see in the renovated Planetarium, along with a short caption (1-2 sentences) describing your idea. Draw and write your caption within the official template ().
  • Grades 3-12: Submit a drawing and a short essay (150-300 words) explaining what you hope to see, experience or learn from the upgraded space. Whether it’s state-of-the-art exhibits, futuristic space travel simulations or new ways to explore the universe, we want to see your creativity shine! .
  • Teachers: Submit a written proposal (300-500 words) brainstorming ideas for exhibits, interactive elements or educational tools that would enhance student learning in the renovated Planetarium. Consider what would make space science, astronomy and STEM topics more engaging, hands-on and accessible for students of all ages. Feel free to include visual aids (however, this is not required).

Let your imagination take flight—draw, write and dream the future of the Fleischmann Planetarium!

  • Teacher

Each of the winners in grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 will receive a personalized trophy and free family membership to the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, as well as the opportunity to have their art and/or essay used in future promotional materials for the Planetarium's renovation.

The winning teacher will receive a personalized, framed star chart and future field trip for their class (all costs covered)!

Additionally, all winners of the Tomorrow’s Universe Competition will receive a stellar honor—their name (or a name of their choice) will be displayed across the LED panels of the new dome theater before every Planetarium show upon the theater’s grand reopening in early 2026 (displayed through early 2027). Whether it’s their own name, their family’s or even their school or classroom, winners will be celebrated as part of the Planetarium’s exciting new
chapter. Winners of the competition will be recognized at a community-wide event on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Sponsor a Panel Program

For those who want to be a part of this special opportunity—even if they’re not a contest winner—the Sponsor a Panel Program offers community members, teachers, families and small businesses the chance to ‘sponsor’ a panel in the new dome theater with a $250 donation. Sponsored names will be featured in the pre-show presentation at every Planetarium showing, with examples like “The Smith Family,” “John Doe,” or “Mrs. Fields’ 3rd Grade Class.”

All proceeds from the Sponsor a Panel Program support the final site preparations for the new dome theater installation. Once that goal is met, additional funds will help maintain and enhance the Planetarium for years to come, ensuring its continued impact on northern Nevada’s community of space lovers and lifelong learners. Sponsorship recognition is annual, with the option to renew each year after the grand reopening. Join us in making history and lighting up the future of space exploration in our region!
