Get answers to commonly asked questions by faculty about supporting academic integrity and upholding the academic standards policy.
Here is a link to the charging letter template for and that contains the information that must be included in the charging letter. This template is applicable for both undergraduate and graduate students.
Students can receive the letter via hand delivery, by mail to the mailing address listed in MyNevada or by email to the student within WebCampus.
Failure to notify the student in one of the methods provided in the policy shall result in the charge being dismissed.
It is not necessary to include the name of the second student in this case. If your case differs from this, please contact the Office of Student Conduct.
Level of violation is based on the egregiousness of the act in question. The academic standards policy lists the types of acts that correspond to the specific level of violation.
Sanctions that are given must be in line with the Academic Standards policy. For example, if a student is charged with a Level A violation, the sanction cannot be an automatic F in the course.
If the student was ejected or removed from a testing situation due to a violation of the policy, the student will be reinstated in the class. If the situation did not involve catching the student in the act in a test situation and the student withdrew before being given the charging letter, the student can no longer be charged and cannot be reinstated to the course.
If you cannot make the scheduled date, you are entitled to receive one continuance. If you do not appear on the second scheduled date (or do not appear without requesting a continuance), the charge is dismissed against the student.
The individuals who testify are determined by the charging faculty member and the student, and each case is different. In a typical case, the people that testify are the charging faculty member or TA who witnessed or has knowledge of the alleged misconduct, the student, and any witnesses either side may have.
Witnesses who are unable to appear in person may provide their testimony via telephone or video conference.
You cannot require or force someone to participate. If your TA is unavailable for a date, the hearing can be rescheduled or the TA can participate via telephone or video conference. If the hearing is rescheduled because of the unavailability of one of your witnesses, it would count as your one continuance.
The charging letter must be signed and submitted to the student by the faculty of record. If you are a TA, you can have your name on the charging letter as well. However, your name cannot replace that of the faculty of record.
No, the student cannot require the TA’s presence. The student may say that the TA is a witness and the Hearing Administrator can invite the witness to attend. However, the TA will not be required or forced to attend.
