Below are descriptions of leadership positions within the College of Engineering.

Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs position description

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs has many duties and responsibilities. In short, virtually anything related to faculty (tenured/tenure-track and non-tenure track) is within the scope of this position. The ultimate goal for the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is to support, advocate for and advance faculty success at all levels of the institution.

This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Coordinating promotion and/or tenure, third-year review, sabbaticals, annual evaluation, retirement, and emeritus nomination processes.
  • Overseeing College committees (Promotion and Tenure, Bylaws, Awards, …)
  • Soliciting applications for teaching, research, creative achievement, and other awards.
  • Collaborating with Associate Dean for Research and department chairs to support success in research
  • Overseeing and advising on the interpretation of University policies regarding faculty in the college.
  • Working with the Director of Communication and Marketing and department chairs on promoting students, faculty, the departments, and the college.
  • Overseeing the development of departmental and college mentoring plans.
  • Other issues related to faculty

  • Managing College computing
    • The Research Computing Engineer, Manager position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. Under this position are several other positions:

    • Integrating the Computer Science & Engineering Research Computing Engineer position into the college team.
      • The goal is they can support each other.
    • Help direct/plan for the college computing
      • Meet with the team weekly
    • Whatever else the Dean assigns
    • Help resolve issues

Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Affairs

The Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Affairs assists the Dean in matters relating to research and graduate program administration of the College. The Associate Dean will advance the research mission of the College, identifying strategic research opportunities and developing internal processes which enhance efficiency surrounding research needs. The position will support the University’s R1 status and enhance other strategic initiatives. The position will oversee and manage the Engineering Research Office. The Associate Dean will support graduate student programs and graduate affairs. The Associate Dean will serve as a liaison with the graduate school and Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) to resolve issues and identify areas for enhancement and new program development.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and re-assess research policies and practices
  • Manage the Engineering Research Office (ERO) manager and supporting staff, supervise and provide evaluation of ERO manager
  • Disseminate research information to faculty and staff to inform them of research opportunities
  • Identify and encourage opportunities where faculty can increase and enhance research efforts
  • Oversee the review of research/funding proposals
  • Act as liaison between College departments and the VPRI Office to include startup negotiations, cost-share and sponsored projects commitments.
  • Approve requests regarding research commitments and appropriating research spaces and resources
  • Identify or enhance opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student research
  • Act as a liaison between the Graduate School and College regarding complex and serious graduate student issues. Provide advisement to and mediation between faculty and graduate students as applicable.
  • Approve graduate student academic requests as needed
  • Develop updated TA distribution policy; approve TA assignments; TA budgets in coordination with the Assistant Dean for Administration
  • Identify overseas countries/universities to establish memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to strategically increase graduate student numbers
  • Coordinate the development of large grant programs for the College
  • Represent the College and/or Dean's Office on various other committees at diverse levels within the University
  • Provide leadership and input on state, regional and national committees to establish and implement state, regional or national research goals
  • Additional projects as assigned by the Dean

Assistant Dean for Assessment, Compliance and Evaluation

The Assistant Dean for Assessment, Compliance and Evaluation is responsible for overseeing and leading the College of Engineering’s efforts in assessment, compliance and evaluation. This position ensures that the College meets accreditation standards, maintains continuous improvement of academic programs, ensures compliance with policies and supports engagement initiatives. The Assistant Dean works collaboratively with faculty, staff and University leadership to enhance educational outcomes, comply with regulatory requirements and promote a data-driven approach to decision-making.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assessment management:
    • Oversee the College’s assessment processes, ensuring alignment with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) accreditation requirements.
    • Lead the coordination and submission of program responses for ABET reviews and manage the College’s NevadaBox site for accreditation documentation.
    • Chair the College of Engineering Assessment Committee and work with academic departments to ensure compliance with institutional and programmatic assessment standards.
    • Manage the core objective reverification process and the fundamental proficiency assessments in Watermark.
    • Serve as the primary coordinator for ABET and NWCCU activities for the College and represent the College on University-wide assessment and core curriculum committees.
    • Provide assessment reports to College leadership and the University as needed, ensuring that assessment methods are innovative, efficient, and meet evolving accreditation standards.
  • Compliance:
    • Resolve conflicts regarding student issues, assist faculty with filing student misconduct charges and support Disability Resource Center (DRC) accommodation compliance.
    • Lead and ensure College compliance with policies, monitor for new policy updates and oversee faculty adherence to required training, including Title IX, accessibility, web security and conflict-of-interest reporting.
  • Evaluation:
    • Lead the data collection and analysis efforts that inform the College’s evaluation of academic programs, student success and engagement initiatives.
    • Serve as a system administrator for assessment software, particularly Watermark, and ensure that faculty and staff are trained in its use.
    • Participate in the College Courses and Curriculum Committee (CCCC) and contribute to curriculum development based on evaluation outcomes.
    • Prepare and present data on demographic trends for internal reporting and public display on the College's website.
  • Supervision and leadership:
    • Supervise the Engineering lecturer team and the Director of Career Services, including setting annual goals, conducting evaluations and fostering professional development.
    • Collaborate with faculty on teaching innovation and improvement, including the organization of events.
    • Mentor faculty members in assessment, teaching practices and compliance with accreditation requirements.
    • Lead initiatives to develop inclusive teaching strategies and address diversity issues within academic programs.
  • Engagement:
    • Lead the College’s engagement efforts by developing and implementing a strategic engagement plan and support activities.

This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and works closely with other academic and administrative leaders across the University to fulfill its mission of continuous improvement and academic excellence.
