Summons, subpoenas and record requests

Service of Summons and Complaint

Service of a summons and complaint must be made in accordance with NRS 41.031. The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is not authorized to accept service of a summons and complaint on behalf of the University. University faculty, staff and employees are not authorized to accept service of a summons and complaint on behalf of the University, department or another individual. If a process server attempts to serve you with documents directed to the University, you should politely decline and notify the OGC immediately.

If you are served with documents that name you personally in a matter that involves your duties or activities conducted by you for the University, you may accept service only for yourself. Notify the OGC immediately and forward the documents to this office. You may wish to keep a copy for your records. The OGC will review the documents, determine what steps are necessary, and discuss with you your involvement, if any.

If you are served with a subpoena, summons, complaint or other legal document addressed to you concerning a non-University matter, you should seek the advice of private outside counsel.

If you are served with a subpoena, note the date and time you were served on the subpoena and whether the service was in person or by mail or fax. Immediately email the subpoena to our office at OGC@unr.edu. Please call (775) 784-3510 to confirm our receipt of the subpoena.
