Global Studies Faculty Research Grant
The Ozmen Institute for Global Studies at the 性爱五色天, Reno in collaboration with the Office of the Provost has allotted special funds to enhance and promote research and other creative efforts that have a significant global/international dimension. The grant program gives special consideration to proposals that produce meaningful results in contributing to the international strengths of Nevada, Reno. Its highest priority will be to provide exploratory funding for projects that promise significant future interdisciplinary research in global studies.
The following types of projects will be considered for funding:
- Global/international research
- Faculty travel to conduct research abroad
- Campus events and outreach activities as pertaining to global/international studies
Please keep in mind the activity should have a campus-wide impact.
The following types of requests will not be funded:
- Ongoing or normal administrative activities
- Any costs associated with presentation of papers at conferences
- Support for university exchange programs
- Hosting in general
- Salary

Grant eligibility, deadlines and review
Any 性爱五色天, Reno faculty member with academic or administrative rank, holding at least a 0.5 full-time equivalent appointment, is eligible to apply for these funds. Faculty can only apply for and receive one award per year. Although applicants may receive grants in consecutive years, those who have not previously received a GSRG will have higher priority.
Proposals for up to $3,000 will be considered for funding. Projects will typically be funded for one year only and must be carried out within the calendar year from January through December. Any extension must be approved in advance by the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies. The funds cannot be used retroactively (i.e. for expenses incurred prior to the award).
Grant proposals for the current period must be submitted and received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025. Proposals submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
How to submit your application
Applications must be submitted in a single email with all supporting documentation attached. Exceptions will only be made for letters of support from department chairs. Revisions or updates after an application has been submitted to the committee will not be accepted. Please email the proposal text and other necessary supporting documents to Sudeep Chandra, Director of the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies.
Supporting documents should be included as attachments to the e-mail, in a standardized format such as Microsoft Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) and as a one-time submission. Faculty must also send a copy of the proposal to their dean or equivalent supervisor.
Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- The academic/scientific merits of the project
- Does the proposal identify a meaningful result that contributes to the international strengths of the 性爱五色天, Reno?
- Is the proposal new and does it promise significant future development involving global/international activities?
- Will the project have a significant impact on professional development at the 性爱五色天, Reno?
- Does it provide evidence of the long-term results of the project?
- Does the chair's letter of reference strongly support the project, especially in terms of the applicant's role statement?
- Are matching funds provided (highly desirable, but not required)?
- Is appropriate supporting material provided giving evidence of commitment abroad?
- Has the applicant received previous GSRGs?
- Is the application packet complete?
Grant applications will be reviewed by the Global Studies Research Grants Committee of the Ozmen Institute. Funding recommendations will be made based on the proposed project and its relevance to the above considerations. Recommendations for partial funding will be verified with the grant applicant. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by spring each year. Awardees will be notified by the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies shortly thereafter.
The grantee is expected to adhere to the proposed project as closely as possible. Significant deviations from the original plan must be approved by the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies. Within two months after the completion of the project, the grantee must submit a summary report outlining the accomplishments of the project to the Ozmen Institute. The grantee is requested to identify the sources of funding in any results funded partially or completely by these funds whenever feasible. The funding source is the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies and the UNR Office of the Provost. Successful applicants are strongly encouraged to make an oral or poster board presentation during the 2022 International Education Week (typically in November) or at another international event on campus.
Grantees are required to submit an International Travel Authorization (ITA) Request to BCN Risk Management prior to the date of travel. Requests received fewer than 30 days prior to the date of travel may not provide adequate time for review, and travel may not be reimbursable. ITA requests submitted after travel has been completed shall not be reimbursed. Travel is not approved until the traveler receives an e-mail confirmation from BCN Risk Management.
Grant application information
The proposal is limited to 3 pages maximum length (double-spaced; 12-point font), inclusive of tables and budget. Other necessary supporting documentation, such as letters of invitation from international institutions and letters of support from department chairs, should be attached to the proposal text. Supporting documentation should be kept to a minimum. Unnecessary attachments such as published papers, letters of recommendation, etc., are highly discouraged.
The impact of the proposed project on professional development or programs must be clearly described in the proposal. Applications must discuss concrete plans to develop lasting results such as ongoing international academic linkages, research agreements, or other such measurable outcomes of the grant funding. If an applicant has received a prior Global Studies Research Grant, the year-end report of the most recently funded project must be attached to the proposal.
The grant application must consist of the following:
1. Cover sheet
2. Proposal of no more than three pages, not including bibliography and any attachments. The proposal must be written in a manner that is readily understood by non-experts outside the applicant's field of study. The proposal should follow the below outline:
- Title
- Abstract (less than 100 words)
- Introduction
- Objectives
- Project description
- Statement clearly identifying impact of the project on professional development or programs
- Timeline (including submission of final report)
- Name, affiliation and qualifications of all faculty and students involved
3. Budget with the following items:
- A line itemized budget of all expenses
- Statement indicating other sources of funding for the proposal being submitted
4. Year-end report of past funded project, if applicable
5. Letter (can be in e-mail format) from department chair or immediate supervisor stating whether the proposed project is consistent with the applicant's role statement
6. Necessary supporting documentation
7. Abbreviated two-page curriculum vita of the applicant
