Sanford Center for Aging, a local nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults, is excited to announce a special event, "Stay Steady: Balance and Movement as We Age," to be held on Friday, Sept. 20 at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) campus. This event is designed to promote awareness and education about balance and mobility, crucial aspects of health and wellness as we age.
DATE: Friday, September 20, 2024
LOCATION: OLLI Campus: 604 W Moana Lane
Lecture: 10 - 11:30 a.m.
Balance Assessments: 12 - 2 p.m.
The "Stay Steady" event aims to empower older adults with the knowledge and tools to maintain and improve their balance and mobility, reduce the risk of falls and enhance overall quality of life.
The event will begin with an informative lecture from 10 to 11:30 a.m., featuring speakers from Sanford Center for Aging: Jessica Yurtinus, DPT, MS assistant director of the Nevada Geriatric Education Center; and Leslie Baker, PharmD, BCGP director of Geriatric Pharmacy Services. The lecture will cover key topics such as the benefits of movement on physical and psychological well-being; how aging affects muscle strength and joint flexibility; and how medication side effects may increase the risk of falls.
Following the lecture, from 12 to 2 p.m., attendees are invited to participate in free balance assessments. These assessments, conducted by trained professionals, will provide personalized feedback and recommendations for improving balance and stability. Time slots must be scheduled in advance.
